The safest thing you could have used to be a big paycheck. Now it's the most fragile.
For most of my life, a high income was the safest thing you could have.
Make good money and you were covered. That was the deal.
Now it's flipped.
Right now, the high-income earners in this country are some of the most afraid people I meet.
They're afraid of losing their jobs.
And they have good reason to be.
Because the more you make, the more you spend. And the more you spend, the more your entire life depends on that income continuing.
So let's do something most people never do. Let's look at exactly what happens if your $500,000 income stops in the next two years.
Then I'll show you the two things we did that would make our income stopping not even matter anymore.
Why the safest thing became the most fragile thing
It comes down to three reasons.
Reason #1: Your lifestyle grows with your income.
This is the biggest risk you're taking right now, and you probably don't think of it as a risk at all.
The more money you make, the more money you spend. Bigger house. Better schools. Nicer cars.
Not because you're reckless. That's just what happens.
But now your lifestyle depends on that income. Every raise you've ever gotten has quietly turned into a new bill.
Reason #2: Getting older adds risk.
The older you get, the more risk gets added in.
If you get hurt, you could become unable to do your job. Your body is the engine, and engines wear out.
Reason #3: You get more expensive to replace, and easier to replace.
If you're an employee and you get hurt, the older you are, the more likely it is that somebody 10 or 15 years younger steps in.
And that younger person is more attractive to the company. Not just because they cost less. Because of longevity.
Put those together and you get something nobody tells you:
Being older and making more money actually creates more risk, not less.
Let's make it concrete: my friend the surgeon
I've got a friend who's a surgeon. He makes about a million dollars a year.
If he stops working, he makes zero.
Now let's run that play forward.
Say something takes him out of the game in the next two years. His health. His hands. A market shift in his field.
His income goes to zero.
But his life doesn't change like that.
The house still has to be paid. The schools still have to be paid. The cars still have to be paid.
And there's nothing passive underneath to catch him.
That's what a fragile income actually looks like.
Here's the part I want you to hear: he hasn't done anything wrong.
He's smart. He works hard. He's great at what he does.
It's just that everything he's built stands on one leg.
Income.
What we did differently
In our business, that's not the case anymore.
Not because we're smarter than a surgeon. Because we did two specific things.
Thing #1: We changed the business itself.
We went from being the people the business depended on to building a system that lets it run without us.
That one shift insulated us. If one of us got hurt and couldn't step back in, the business would keep producing.
We stopped being the single point of failure.
If you own a business, ask yourself honestly: if you disappeared tomorrow, would it still produce? Or would it stop the day you did?
Thing #2: We built passive income streams.
This one is really key.
I think of it like planting orange trees.
Every seed you plant eventually becomes a tree that produces oranges without you having to do the work.
And every passive income check that comes in reduces your risk a little bit more.
Why? Because your active income now has less to support. It's carrying less of your life.
So even if you got laid off, or couldn't go back to work, your next job wouldn't have to pay as much.
Those trees are already covering part of the bill your lifestyle sends you.
That's the whole game. You're not trying to quit your job tomorrow. You're trying to make your paycheck less important every single month.
The one number that tells you how exposed you are
Here's how you measure it.
Take your monthly passive income and divide it by your monthly expenses.
Passive income ÷ monthly expenses = your Financial Freedom Score.
It's also your fragility score. Same number, two names.
If it's near zero: everything you have is riding on your paycheck. One injury, one layoff, one shift in your industry, and the whole thing wobbles.
If it's climbing toward 100%: your paycheck stops being something you're afraid of losing.
Most high earners have never calculated it.
And the ones who do are usually surprised, because a big income can hide a score that's close to zero.
